FIFO and LIFO Explained
FIFO and LIFO are two common inventory valuation methods used in accounting. They determine the cost of goods sold and the resulting cost of goods available for sale. In FIFO, the oldest inventory is considered first when calculating cost of goods sold, while in LIFO, the most recent inventory is considered first. The choice between FIFO and LIFO can significantly impact a company’s reported income and tax liability.

• FIFO (First In, First Out): This method assigns the cost of the oldest inventory to the cost of goods sold. It assumes that the first goods purchased are the first goods sold. This method is generally used when inventory turnover is rapid or when prices are stable.
• LIFO (Last In, First Out): This method assigns the cost of the most recent inventory to the cost of goods sold. It assumes that the last goods purchased are the first goods sold. This method may be used when prices are increasing to defer taxes or reduce the impact of inflation on reported income.
